This is an optional Pre-Conference Workshop on Monday 22 June 2026 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
This intensive pre-conference workshop, delivered in person by Gael Strack and Dr Bill Smock, and supported by local experts, including Dr Claire Ferguson, homicide research expert at QUT, brings world-leading investigative and forensic expertise together for a unique, deep-dive learning experience.
Drawing on decades of frontline casework, research and system reform across the United States and internationally, Gael and Bill will unpack why non-fatal strangulation is one of the strongest predictors of future lethal violence, and what professionals must do differently to identify, document and respond to it effectively.
Participants will strengthen their understanding of: The medical and forensic realities of strangulation, including Invisible injury and delayed lethality; Evidence-based risk indicators and their link to homicide trajectories; Best practice investigation; documentation and courtroom presentation; Cross-sector coordination between health, policing, prosecution and advocacy.
Grounded in real cases in both the US and Australia, and practical application, this workshop is designed for professionals working across domestic and family violence, health, justice and child protection. Places are limited to enable robust discussion and applied learning. This is a rare opportunity to learn directly from two global leaders whose work has fundamentally reshaped the way strangulation is understood, and how lives can be saved.
Delivered in person by Gael Strack, internationally recognised expert in domestic violence, strangulation and hidden homicide, and Dr Bill Smock, a globally respected clinical forensic physician and police surgeon.
This bespoke workshop brings world-leading investigative, medical and justice expertise to Brisbane. Places are limited to enable participants to deeply explore the subject matter with Gael, Bill and other subject matter experts in the room.
Previous workshops have sold out.
